| In 1987 Elena Kovaleva found a half-naked cat in the streets of Rostov-na-Donu. After
a visit to the vet, the cat was found to be absolutely healthy and was named Varvaroy. It was the first Don Sphynx
cat. Out of the mating with a common cat named Vasily was born a kitten named Chita. Irina Nemykina took this kitty
and started a breeding programm for this new naked breed. There was not any cat club in Rostov-on-Don in those
days, so Irina kept her studbooks herself. Of course, they were far from precise, yet very helpful from a genetic
standpoint. According to these documents it was determined that the new gene for hairlessness is dominant to the
gene for normal coat. This was evident because when heterozygous hairless cats were mated to normal coated cats,
a number of hairless kittens always resulted in the litter. The hairless cats of Myth Cattery were bred exclusively
to European Shorthairs and Domestic Shorthairs. |

Chita

| The first Don Sphynx kittens were born in Myth Cattery (owned by Irina Nemykina) out
of Chita and Hannibal (mother and son). For the first time Chita, Hannibal and their kittens were shown at an exhibition
in 1993, but the breed was oficially recognized only in 1998. |

Afynogen Myth
|
One of the first Don Sphynx kittens to be sold was Afynogen Myth. Afynogen's bone structure
was a bit light. His head was not especially long, but had a smooth structure and flat cheekbones. The breeding
of Peterbald cats was started in Sankt Petersburg by Olga Mironova by mating Afynogen Myth with an Oriental Shorthair
cat named Radma von Jagerhof. The first Petersburg Sphynx (Peterbald) kittens were born in 1994 and they were Muscat
and Mandarin iz Murino. In February 1995 Nocturne and Nejenka iz Murino were born. The development of the breed
took different ways. In Moscow, the development of the breed was continued by Afyonge's brother, Don Myth. The
first breeders in Moscow created other Peterbald lines. They mated Don Myth with different representatives of east
grup cats. |
| Some of the most well-known Oriental cats which stand at the base of the majority of
Peterbald cats are Regina Gel Gressi, Belena iz Belokamennoj, Johana Du Boyes Du Prins. The first Peterbalds were
sold to other clubs in various parts of Russia. And they have become the founders for developing Peterbalds throughout
Russia. The most significant cat responsible for the Peterbalds increase was a black male named Nocturn iz Murino.
He was used widely for matings with purebred Oriental and Siamese females, and he produced many high quality offspring
to follow in his footsteps. |
